Hanoi tourism finds solutions to recover

Due to the impact of the epidemic, from 2020 to now, the capital's tourism activities have decreased significantly.

NDO - A workshop titled "Evaluating the results of tourism development in Hanoi in the 2016-2020 period, with orientations for the 2021-2025 period and the following years" was held by the Hanoi Municipal Department of Tourism on November 11.

The capital's tourism sector has made a strong breakthrough in the period 2016 - 2019, with the average tourist growth to Hanoi reaching 10.1% per year. Total revenue from tourists increased by 17.6% per year on average, reaching VND103,812 billion in 2019, contributing 12.54% to Hanoi's GRDP.

However, due to the impact of the epidemic, from 2020 to now, the capital's tourism activities have decreased significantly, from the number of visitors to revenue. Specifically, the number of tourists to Hanoi during this period decreased by 70%, total revenue from tourists decreased by 73%, and the average capacity of the hotel sector decreased by 38% compared to 2019. More than 90% of tourism businesses have temporarily stopped operating. The target set for the whole 5-year period 2016 - 2020 has not been achieved as expected.

However, in preparation for the recovery period, Hanoi is developing many new product packages while innovating and improving the quality of tourism services.

Hanoi's tourism industry will deploy seven groups of new solutions in the period of 2021 - 2025. In which, the main solutions are: Investing in the construction of tourism infrastructure and technical facilities in a synchronous, professional, modern and friendly direction; Promoting the development of diversified, unique and high-quality tourism products that are suitable for market demand; Promoting tourism and developing tourist market; Supporting the development and enhancing the competitiveness of organisations and individuals operating in tourism services; Training, fostering and developing tourism human resources; and Improving the effectiveness and efficiency of state management towards building a safe and friendly tourism environment.

At the same time, the city also promotes the formation of key tourist clusters such as: Hanoi's central tourist cluster (development of cultural, heritage, and culinary tourism); peri-urban tourism clusters (development of MICE tourism, sports, and entertainment tourism); Hanoi suburban tourist cluster (development of resort tourism, rural tourism, eco-tourism, experiences, and education).
