United States state department issues Europe travel alert
The United States state department has issued a release warning American citizens to the risk of potential terrorist attacks throughout Europe this summer.
The department warns terrorists may be planning to target major events, tourist sites, restaurants, commercial centres and transportation.
“The large number of tourists visiting Europe in the summer months will present greater targets for terrorists planning attacks in public locations, especially at large events,” warned the state department earlier.
France will host the European Football Championship from June 10th-July 10th, with the event considered a particular risk.
US citizens in stadiums, fan zones, and unaffiliated entertainment venues broadcasting the tournaments in France and across Europe are all warned such locations represent potential targets for terrorists.
Other large-scale sporting events and public gathering places throughout Europe are also at risk.
France has extended its state of emergency through July 26th to cover the period of the championship, as well as the Tour de France cycling race which will be held from July 2nd-24th.
US citizens in Europe during the period should exercise vigilance when in public places or using mass transportation, and be aware of immediate surroundings and avoid crowded places, the department adds.
