NDO - Joining hands to promote a sustainable world recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic, is an urgent task of the international community and this “global message” has been emphasised by the United Nations and many other international organisations, in recent joint statements.

Over the past week, nearly 200 parliamentarians from countries around the world participated in the 2022 Parliamentary Hearing, under the joint initiative of the United Nations and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), to promote joint efforts in sustainably restoring the world after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking at the meeting, the President of the United Nations General Assembly emphasised the urgent need for a sustainable recovery, for all countries in the world, following the pandemic. Accordingly, the common goal of the United Nations and the IPU is to promote global cooperation and multilateralism, and UN resolutions can be turned into national legislation. These tasks will become especially important, in the context that the world has experienced more than two years of crisis, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and many countries are struggling to eliminate hunger, reduce poverty and respond to climate change.

Previously, “sustainable recovery” also became a message emphasised at other international forums. At the recent Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum, APEC member economies affirmed their commitment to dealing with the current health and economic crisis, and their determination to bring the region to a stable and sustainable recovery.

Chair of the APEC Senior Officials Meeting 2021 Vangelis Vitalis, once emphasised that: “There was never a more important time for economies to work together to share, rebuild and recover” and “Senior officials have met throughout the year and worked intersessionally on various programmes to advance APEC's work to be responsive to the crisis and relevant to the recovery.”

Leaders attending the APEC Forum stressed that the key to the region's successful recovery is strengthening sustainability and inclusion, while pursuing innovation and a digitally enabled recovery.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) also emphasised the theme “Shared Values: Building a Green and Inclusive Future”, in its message at the recent high-level forum. OECD participants confirmed that the two tools that help optimise strength and ensure an even post-COVID-19 recovery, include a dashboard of indicators to guide recovery efforts and International Programme for Action on Climate, with new direction and monitoring solutions, to pursue the transition to a net-zero-emissions economy by 2050.

Although taking place at different times, with different topics of discussion, experts from APEC, OECD, the United Nations and other international organisations, have a common interest in promoting sustainable economic recovery after the pandemic. International organisations and governments, have also reached an important consensus on the challenges that humanity is facing and solving together, in the context that the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change have exacerbated inequality between countries and within countries, requiring action to reverse this.

Three of the most important challenges facing countries today are: responding to climate change, shaping the global economy in a sustainable way, and rooting out inequalities that are holding back economic development and social progress.

The facts mentioned above show that “sustainable recovery” is a message and an “order of the times”. Tackling the post-pandemic challenges in the medium and long term is the thing to do for every country. The key tasks have been pointed out by the United Nations and international organisations as above. However, the successful implementation of the sustainable recovery process, requires the solidarity and determination of all countries around world.
