For the first time a shipment of 30 tonnes of fresh lychees from Luc Ngan district in the northern province of Bac Giang has been exported to China via the Kep international intermodal rail terminal.

The trial shipment represents a positive sign for the future export of agricultural products to China by rail.

According to Tran The Hung, general director of the Railway Transport and Trading Joint Stock Company (Ratraco), all preparations for the transportation of the fruit, including infrastructure, containers, wagons, and others, have bene completed.

The company is working alongside domestic businesses that wish to export fresh lychees to China for cooperation, he added.

As expected, on average about 300 tonnes of lychees are set to be transported to Pingxiang Station in Guangxi, China, via Kep station each day.

Hung noted that transportation by rail will help to shorten the travel time and avoid congestion occurring at border gates, meaning that the overall quality of lychees will be better.

In 2023, Luc Ngan grew more than 17,000 hectares of lychees with an estimated output of about 98,000 tonnes, including over 3,900 hectares of early ripening lychees.

Its main export markets include China, the EU, the United States, Australia, Japan, the Republic of Korea, as well as some countries in Southeast Asia and the Middle East.
