The noodle shop has a “specialty of listening to curse”, more than 40 years still crowded in Ho Chi Minh City

Visiting a noodle shop in Phu Nhuan district, Ho Chi Minh City, diners often hear shouting and shouting at the owner’s staff.

“Where are your eyes that you can’t see the jar of sugar?”

“If you want to be happy at work, go home and rest”

“Guests come in but it stays inert”

Hearing the curse of Mrs. Huyen (the shop owner), the young male waiter hurriedly gathered the finished guests’ dishes into the bowl and wiped the table. For many diners, the image of the hostess loudly shouting and swearing at the staff has become familiar.

The shop “vermicelli cursing Ms. Huyen” is nestled in a small alley on Nguyen Cong Hoan Street, Ward 7, Phu Nhuan District, and has existed for more than 40 years. Mrs. Huyen is the 3rd generation in her family who sells noodles, she learned to cook from her mother-in-law.

Customers can choose vermicelli or noodles, served with a bowl of soup filled with beef, beef balls, minced shrimp, poached eggs. Ms. Huyen directly seasoned sugar, monosodium glutamate, salt, pepper, etc. into the soup, instead of simmering with bones like other places.

The ingredients keep the freshness, the shrimp is chewy, crispy, the beef is tender, the egg yolk is fat, combined with green onions and ground pepper to create the aroma. Finally, the crispy puff pastry is placed on top to create a highlight for the bowl of vermicelli.

The shop opens from 9:30 am and is always full of customers until the afternoon, the special price is 75,000 VND/bowl. When coming to the restaurant, many diners were also “startled” by Huyen’s swearing at the staff. Peak time frame 11h-12h30, customers are quite crowded, the owner constantly shouts and urges the waiter to act quickly.($1=24,000 VND)

According to the reporter’s observation on the afternoon of June 1, Ms. Huyen was the only one to taste and mix vermicelli for guests, the other 3 employees just ran the table. Therefore, when the number of guests is too crowded, it is difficult to avoid waiting.

Huyen’s biological brother revealed that the service staff are all descendants of the family. Huyen’s husband is always standing with the calves and clearing the side tables. This woman is straight-forward and speaks loudly.

“Because of the family, I scolded like that, then stopped, didn’t mind. The shop didn’t dare to curse customers, just shouted at the waiter to do it faster,” he said.

About the past 5 years, besides diners, many YouTubers and TikTokers have also been curious to “curse Ms. Huyen” to witness firsthand the cursing scenes of the owner with the staff. Despite being yelled at, everyone quietly followed Mrs. Huyen’s instructions and did not react.

Mr. Thanh Hoa (living in Thu Duc City) has been to “vermicelli cursing Ms. Huyen” many times. He said that the owner only yelled at the staff, but the customers were sometimes annoyed when they were “heard and cursed” often.

“I don’t advocate cursing others. But perhaps, the curse has become a “brand” and attracts curiosity from everyone. Those who do not know coming here for the first time will surely be scared. “, said Mr. Hoa.

Mr. Duc Tien (living in Ho Chi Minh City) confirmed that he will not come to this restaurant for the second time because the owner gives the shop a lot of MSG, the soup is not really special. The 28-year-old said that no one feels good to eat when he hears shouting in his ear.

He was annoyed: “Sitting in the shop, many customers had to be startled because the shop owner cursed like water. I don’t want to spend money to eat in a noisy, cursing space.”
