On the Vietnamese side, the ceremony was attended by Vietnamese Ambassador to Laos Nguyen Ba Hung, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs To Anh Dung, Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Truong Son along with representatives from the Party Central Committee’s Commission for External Relations, President's Office, Government Office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Planning and Investment, according to the World & Vietnam Report.

On the Laos side, Deputy Prime Minister, Head of the Central Committee for Covid-19 Prevention and Control Kikeo Khaykhamphithoun; Minister of Health Bounfeng Phoummalaysith and representatives from a number of relevant ministries and departments attended the event.

Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs To Anh Dung extended his deep sympathy over the difficulties and challenges caused by the epidemic that Laos has suffered, stressing that Vietnam would always side by side with the country in its Covid-19 battle.

Dung expressed his belief that under the direction of the Party and State, the determination of the authorities and the entirety of the people, Laos would soon control the epidemic and restore socio-economic development.

The Party, State and people of Vietnam presented the Party, State and people of Laos $500.000 and medical equipment and supplies including 2 million medical masks, 200 ventilators and 10.000 kg of Chloramine B disinfectant.

Besides, Vietnam also dispatched 35 medical experts to help Laos in preventing the epidemic, establishing the testing system and field hospitals.

On this occasion, the Party Central Committee’s Commission for External Relations, the Vietnam - Laos Cooperation Committee and the Government Office also gifted Laos’ counterparts with 50.000, 500.000 and 20.000 medical masks respectively.

Deputy Prime Minister Kikeo Khaykhamphithoun congratulated Vietnam’s considerable achievements in Covid-19 prevention and control.

He thanked the Party, State and people of Vietnam for their timely support for the Party, State and people of Laos, affirming that the donations had special significances, encouraging the country’s spirit in the Covid-19 fight.

He also stressed that Vietnam was the first country to assist Laos to cope with the latest coronavirus outbreak. This was a vivid manifestation for the great friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between the two countries, he added.

In April 2020, when the Covid-19 broke out in Laos, Vietnam supported the nation with 1,000 sets of protective clothing, 160,000 medical masks, a RT- PCR test kit and 7.150 test kits for SARS-CoV-2, worth a total of $300.000.

During the past year, Vietnamese expats and enterprises in Laos have also aided Laos’ Covid-19 battle in various forms.


Laos on March 3 added 33 new Covid-19 cases in six out of 18 cities and provinces in the past 24 hours, marking a three-fold decrease from a day earlier, reported its Health Ministry.

All 18 Lao cities and provinces remain in lockdown till May 5. The authorities are discussing whether the lockdown should be extended.

The country has so far recorded 966 infection cases, more than 900 of which were detected from early April, mostly locally transmitted. Sixty patients have recovered and there has been not any death related to the disease.


Vietnam has 19 new cases of Covid-19 to report for the past 12 hours to 6 pm of May 3, according to the Health Ministry.

Nine of the new cases were imported ones. The domestic cases were eight in Vinh Phuc and two in Ha Nam.

The new cases brought the national count to 2,981.

Also on May 3, 11 patients were given the all-clear, raising the total recoveries to 2,560 patients. The death toll remains at 35.

Among the patients under treatment, 24 have tested negative for the coronavirus once, 12 twice and 38 thrice.

A total of 39,870 people who had close contact with Covid-19 patients or arrived from pandemic-hit areas are being quarantined nationwide.

After locally infected cases were detected in late April, localities around the country are tightening epidemic prevention measures.
