History associated with Quang Binh Quan

Quang Binh Quan under the Nguyen Dynasty was built of earth (1631) for the purpose of protecting the Nguyen citadel. It is located in the Luy Thay system including Luy Truong Sa, Luy Tran Ninh, Luy Nhat Le, and Luy Truong Duc, stretching about 30km.

The Luy Thay system was designed by Lord Master Nguyen Dao Duy Tu. In addition to the design, he was also the person who directly directed the construction (1631 – 1634) with the purpose of helping Lord Nguyen Dang Trong against the attacks of Trinh lords outside in the Trinh – Nguyen period. Here, the terrain is close to the mountain, like a slot, so it is very stable, separated from the northern region.

The foundation of the building was built in 1631

During the reign of Lord Nguyen, Northerners, if they wanted to enter Quang Binh’s palace by road, had to go through Quang Binh Quan and present the necessary documents before they could enter the Nam Mon gate to enter the citadel. If you go by water, you can take a boat to see Nhat Le, present the documents at the Thu Ngu gate, and then take a boat to the east gate to enter the citadel.

Quang Binh Quan is located right at the section that protects the North-South road and waterway traffic from the Nhat Le estuary. Because of that, more than 7 times when the Trinh invaders crossed the Gianh River into the Trong region, they were stopped. Although it is a painful relic during the period of national conflict, Quang Binh Quan has promoted the art of Vietnam’s military fortification architecture.

Quang Binh Quan was built according to an architectural model with a unique combination of two elements, which is both a unique artistic architecture and a solid battle bastion. It was this work that also became the inspiration for many later military architecture researchers.

In 1824, King Minh Mang ordered the restoration of Quang Binh Quan with the elevation of the watchtower floor by a solid type of baked brick. After the inauguration, he included Quang Binh Quan in the list of unique historical and cultural works of the country. This work is also embossed into Nghi Dinh located right in front of The Mieu in the Forbidden City.

Before the strong revolution in August 1945, Quang Binh Quan still had a moat outside the citadel, a brick bridge over the moat. However, the building was destroyed by the French when they withdrew from Dong Hoi in 1954. It was restored later. In 1965, it was again sabotaged by American aircraft. Currently, Quang Binh Quan has been rebuilt like the original more than 3 centuries ago.
