According to the China Customs Agency, the country's cashew imports surged significantly in 2021. Cashew imports into China hit USD 175 million in November 2021, up 23.8 percent year on year.

China has increased its imports of Vietnamese cashews in recent years. From January to November of last year, cashews imported from Vietnam to China totaled USD 156 million, an increase of 26.9 percent over the previous year's same period. Vietnam's cashew market share accounted for 80 percent of China's total cashew import value.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade's Agency of Foreign Trade, nuts have been a mainstay in the Chinese diet since the country's National Health Policy, titled "Dietary Guidelines for Chinese People," emphasizing daily nut intake.

China's strong surge in cashew imports can also be attributed to cashew processors' new drive to market "everyday nuts" such as cashews, as well as ready-to-eat packaged products including a range of nuts from Chinese processors.
