How do delivery workers protect themselves and recipients from COVID-19 in Ho Chi Minh City?

Delivery workers in Ho Chi Minh City are required to strictly follow pandemic prevention and control measures while on the job, and many of them have been provided with COVID-19 vaccination.

However, many people have been concerned over the possibility that these delivery staff could become a source of infection given the recent surge in number of COVID-19 cases in the community.

Nguyen Viet Linh, BeGroup's communications director, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that information of its delivery workers had been submitted to the municipal Department of Industry and Trade in accordance with regulations.

Due to the complicated pandemic, BeGroup has encouraged cashless payment and advised its delivery staff to strictly follow safety measures, namely wearing face masks, keeping a safe distance, and sanitizing their hands regularly.

At many apartment buildings and alleys, a specific space has been arranged for delivery workers to leave the goods, thus preventing direct contact between them and recipients.

A representative of Gojek Vietnam stated that the company had registered nearly 8,000 drivers, who are in charge of delivering food and essential items via GoFood and GoSend services, with the city’s Department of Industry and Trade.

Gojek is working with competent authorities to provide its drivers with COVID-19 vaccination.

About 50 percent of them have received the jabs so far, the representative added.

Grab Vietnam has also tried to minimize contact between delivery workers and recipients by providing a non-contact delivery option in its app.

Delivery workers will place parcels at a location near recipients’ home and leave, allowing clients to receive their delivery without coming into direct contact with anyone.

A representative of Best Express asserted that the company considers protecting their staff a top priority, with over 2,000 delivery workers having received their first vaccine doses.

They are constantly reminded to disinfect parcels and keep a safe distance from others while on the job.

“We are trying our best to fully vaccinate our deliver workers at the soonest as they play a very important role in the circulation of goods,” the representative said.

From August 23, app-based delivery service will be suspended in Thu Duc City, District 8, District 12, Go Vap District, Binh Tan District, Binh Thanh District, Binh Chanh District, and Hoc Mon District, according to a new regulation issued on Saturday afternoon.

In other districts, deliver workers may continue to operate but must travel within one district only.
