MADRID (AP) — Spanish authorities say former super lightweight world boxing champion Pedro "Perico" Fernandez has died. He was 64.

The regional government of Aragon in northern Spain said he died on Friday in a medical center in Zaragoza, where he had been under care since 2012. A spokesman for the center would not divulge the cause of death.

Fernandez won the vacant super lightweight belt in 1974 after beating Japanese fighter Lion Furuyama on a split decision in Lazio, Italy. He retained the title in 1975 by knocking out Joao Henrique, but lost it later that year when he was KO'ed by Saensak Muangsurin in Bangkok. He lost a rematch for the title in 1977 in Madrid by unanimous decision.

Fernandez fought 125 pro fights, winning 82 and drawing 15 until he retired in 1987.
