HCMC – An additional 119 workers of Nidec Sankyo Vietnam Co., Ltd at the Saigon Hi-Tech Park in HCMC’s Thu Duc City have tested positive for Covid-19, doubling the company’s Covid-19 cases to 238, according to the management board of the hi-tech park. These new cases have yet to be confirmed by the Ministry of Health.

The new cases were detected last night, July 5, after the healthcare sector conducted quick tests on workers of the company. The company has suspended its operations since July 3 to focus on the fight against the pandemic, the local media reported.

The first Covid-19 case at the company was detected on June 28. The figure increased to 119 by July 2.

At the time, 1,000 workers were found to be in close contact with Covid-19 cases. Of the total, 700 were asked to quarantine at the company as centralized quarantine centers in the city were overloaded.

Some of them were later moved to concentrated quarantine facilities, while others will continue quarantining themselves at a quarantine center that the company has established at the Saigon Hi-tech Park.

Truong Thi Kieu Nhu, vice chairwoman of Nidec Sankyo Vietnam’s labor union, said workers of the company had been anxious as many others had tested positive for Covid-19. Meanwhile, the company has faced a lack of accommodation and restrooms for workers.

According to deputy head of the Saigon Hi-tech Park’s management board, the situation at Nidec Sankyo Vietnam is urgent. It needs further support from the competent and healthcare agencies.

Nidec Sankyo Vietnam has recorded the most Covid-19 cases and suspected cases among companies in industrial and export processing zones in HCMC.

According to statistics from the HCMC Labor Federation, nearly 20,000 workers were suspended from work as of July 1 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, including nearly 1,000 Covid-19 patients, over 6,700 in direct contact with Covid-19 cases and some 12,000 in indirect contact with Covid-19 cases.
