Cold day or severe cold day conditions are expected to prevail in isolated pockets of west Rajasthan during the next 24 hours and over Bihar during the next 3 days.


According to Skymet Weather, a cyclonic circulation is seen over South Rajasthan and adjoining areas. A cyclonic system is seen over north-eastern Bihar and adjoining areas.

A cyclonic system formed in the southwestern parts of the Bay of Bengal and along the coasts of Sri Lanka is active as before. An anti-cyclonic circulation is seen near Vidarbha and adjoining parts of central India. A trough is extending from north-eastern Bihar to southern Haryana.

During the next 24 hours, light to moderate rains may occur over northern districts of eastern Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland. There is also a possibility of light snowfall in one or two places in the high altitude areas of Arunachal Pradesh.

Weather in the rest of the country will be mostly dry and clear. Dense fog is likely over Punjab, Haryana, North Rajasthan, eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal.

In northwest India, the effect of dry and icy northwesterly winds will increase from Punjab to the Gangetic plains, especially in Uttar Pradesh, causing the minimum temperature of these parts to fall by 1 to 2 degrees.

According to Weather.com, parts of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh are expected to brace of chilly weather conditions as fresh snowfall is on the cards. This is mainly due to the presence of a western disturbance over central Asia. The system is expected to reach the Western Himalayan region by Friday. The activity will begin with snowfall over Ladakh on Friday afternoon, and spread into Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh on Saturday.

Under its influence, on Sunday, parts of north Punjab and north Haryana are likely to receive rain. The best falls from Friday to Sunday are expected across Jammu & Kashmir with 50 -80 mm of accumulated precipitation peak on Saturday.

Rain or snow activity will be limited to the Western Himalayan region, but the induced cyclonic circulation is expected to impact southern parts such as Rajasthan and Gujarat. It is also expected to result in lower temperatures both in highs and lows over the region through the weekend.

As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a fall in minimum temperatures by 2-4°C is very likely over most parts of northwest India during the next 3 days. This drop will lead to the prevalence of Cold wave conditions in isolated pockets over Uttarakhand during the next two days. Similar conditions are also in cards for parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi on January 20 and 21.

Dense to very dense fog in isolated or some pockets has been in the forecast for Rajasthan during the next two days and over Bihar during the next 24 hours. Moreover, the dense fog may occur in isolated pockets of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh during the next 24 hours. The forecast adds that a significant decrease in spread and density is expected thereafter.

A cyclonic circulation to the southeast of Sri Lanka brings rain mainly to Sri Lanka and the surrounding waters. The southern tip of India can also be affected until Friday. Another cyclonic circulation is located over Bangladesh and brings scattered snow/rain across Arunachal Pradesh and the adjoining areas. The activity is likely to continue until Thursday.

Regional Forecast

Scattered rain/snow and thunderstorms are likely over Arunachal Pradesh. Besides, isolated rain and thunderstorms are possible over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala. Dense fog is expected at isolated places over north and central India.
