Vietnam cuts deal to export fresh longan to Japan

HCMC – After six long years of negotiations, Vietnam has clinched a deal to begin the formal export of fresh longan to Japan.

On January 3, Hoang Phat Fruit Co., Ltd, located in Long An Province, shipped 10 tons of fresh longan to Japan. This was the first time Vietnam had sent fresh longan to the Japanese market.

The batch of fresh longan was shipped to Japan by air.

After this shipment, the company will continue to export 70 to 100 tons of fresh longan monthly to Japan by sea and air.

Prior to the shipment, fresh longan was cold treated at a set temperature of 1.3 degrees Celsius for 13 days to eliminate potential pests, supervised by Japanese experts.

Vietnam has 80,000 hectares under longan cultivation, with annual output of 600,000 tons. However, only 2,000 hectares and three factories were granted growing area codes to export longan to Japan.

Given the situation, Vietnam’s Plant Protection Department and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development have joined hands to step up the granting of the growing area packaging area code for longan growers in accordance with food safety to increase longan exports to Japan.
