Quy Nhon Port JSC improves capacity, affirms strategic importance

Quy Nhon Port JSC was established in the central province of Binh Dinh in accordance with a 1976 decision of the Ministry of Transport. Located in Quy Nhon Bay, which is convenient for docking, loading and unloading cargo all year round, Quy Nhon Port is an important maritime traffic hub and the gateway to the East Sea for the south-central region, the Central Highlands and the Mekong sub-region countries. In 2010, the cargo cleared through Quy Nhon Port reached 4.5 million tonnes, more than double the designed capacity, and rose to 7.5 million tonnes in 2015. In 2019, the first year after being taken over by the Vietnam Maritime Corporation, the cleared goods through the port surged to 9.1 million tonnes, an increase of over nine percent compared to 2018. In 2020, the output reached a record of 11 million tonnes, up nearly 32 percent compared to 2018.

The development plan for the 2021-2025 period calls for an expansion of Quy Nhon Port to nearly 90 hectares, three times its current scale. Accordingly, wharf No.1 will be extended by 35 meters for a total length of 480 meters, ensuring simultaneous handling of two 30,000 DWT general cargo vessels or container ships at full load. The wharf structure is also designed to provide anchorage for 50,000 DWT full-load vessels in the latter period, in line with the progress of upgrading and expanding the Quy Nhon route. The upgrade of wharf No. 1 will increase the port’s cargo handling capacity from eight to 15 million tonnes per year, meeting cargo transportation demand for local socioeconomic development and increasing the facility’s economic efficiency.

Improved service orientation

The year 2021 marked a breakthrough for Quy Nhon Port in investment and application of information technology in management and operations, gradually forming a “seaport technology ecosystem” oriented towards improving service quality and experience. Quy Nhon Port has completed the investment and put into use an automatic fee collection system, financial, human resource and wage management applications, and Terminal Operating System (TOS) software.

On November 28, 2021, Quy Nhon Port launched an e-portal providing Electronic Port (Eport) and Electronic Delivery Order (EDO) services and a newly upgraded TOS for customers that is suitable for production and business as well as ensuring Covid-19 prevention and control. Le Duy Duong, Deputy General Director of Quy Nhon Port JSC, said the port would put into operation an automatic Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) function and online payment via current electronic payment methods in early 2022. These will help customers update actual cargo data status round the clock, ensuring honesty and saving cargo management costs during the use of seaport services, improve service quality and customer experience, and simplify the freight forwarding process towards fully electronic payment.

With the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2021, the port applied the “three-on-site” model with workers living on site rather than going home and risking further spread of the infection. This helped Quy Nhon Port maintained stable operations, with most of key indicators recording growth. By the end of 2021, the cargo output cleared through Quy Nhon Port was estimated at 11.5 million tonnes, revenue at VND1.3 trillion, and profit at VND400 billion.

The impressive growth in revenue and profit, along with the upgrade of wharf No. 1 and the operation of the

Eport system have made Quy Nhon Port a strategically located flagship enterprise of the Vietnam Maritime

Corporation (VIMC).
