Olympics: Damian Warner writes himself into history books with men's decathlon win

Damian Warner has become Canada's first Olympic champion in the men's decathlon, finishing with an Olympic Record of 9,018 points at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 on August 5.


He becomes just the fourth decathlete in history to break the 9,000 point mark.

World record holder Kevin Mayer of France took silver with 8,726 points - the same as he did in Rio - with Ashley Moloney clinching bronze in an Australian Record of 8,649 points.

Belgium’s Nafi Thiam successfully defended her Olympic heptathlon title highlighting her class in the combined events over two days in Tokyo 2020.

The 26-year-old Thiam became only the second woman to win back-to-back titles in the event since US legend Jackie Joyner-Kersee in Barcelona 1992.

Thiam amassed a total of 6,791 points over the seven events followed by a Dutch 2-3 on the podium with Anouk Vetter (6,689) and Emma Oosterwegel (6,590) winning the silver and bronze medals.

Wrestling: ROC's Zavur Uguev seals victory in men's freestyle 57kg

ROC’s Zavur Uguev continued his impressive form in international wrestling by defeating India's Kumar Ravi 7-4 in a thrilling final of the men's freestyle 57kg at Tokyo 2020.

On the road to the gold medal, Uguev had also beaten in the semifinal Iran’s Reza Atrinagharchi 8-3, and in earlier rounds Uzbekistan’s Gulomjon Abdullaev 6-6 and USA’s Thomas Gilman 5-4.

Gilman went on to win a bronze medal after beating Atrinagharchi 9-1. The second bronze was won by Kazakhstan’s Nurislam Sanayev who sealed a 5-1 victory over Bulgaria’s Georgi Vangelov.

American David Taylor scored a dramatic 4-3 victory in the freestyle wrestling 86kg Olympic final at Tokyo 2020 against his arch rival Rio 2016 Olympic champion Hassan Yazdanicharati.

It all came down to the last seconds on Thursday evening with the American trailing 3-2, but Taylor saved his best for last scoring two big point to turn the epic bout around. Taylor ended proceedings shortly after, sealing a 10-0 victory through technical superiority. It was the 52nd-consecutive victory for the Nevada-born grappler.

ROC’s Artur Naifonov held his nerve to seal a narrow 2-0 win over Uzbekistan’s Javrail Shapiev and bag the first bronze, while San Marino won their third medal in Tokyo after Myles Amine beat India’s Deepak Punia 4-2 for the second bronze.

Japan’s Risako Kawai won her second Olympic gold medal in wrestling after beating Belarus’ Iryna Kurachkina 5-0 in the final of the freestyle 57kg at Tokyo 2020 on Thursday.

On her road to the final, Kawai also beat Olympic gold medallist in freestyle 53kg, USA’s Helen Maroulis 2-1, and demolished Mongolia Khongorzul Boldsaikhan 7-0 and Guinea’s Fatoumata Camara 8-2

The first of two bronze medal matches was won by 29-year-old Maroulis who overpowered 20-year-old Boldsaikhan 11-0. The second was claimed by Bulgaria’s Evelina Nikolova who defeated ROC’s Valeria Koblova 5-0.

Karate: Ivet Goranova crowned inaugural women's kumite -55kg Olympic champion

Bulgaria's Ivet Goranova defeated Ukraine's Anzhelika Terliuga in a 5-1 victory to win gold in the women's kumite -55kg at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 on August 5.

It was also Bulgaria's first Olympic gold medal since Beijing 2008, where Rumyana Neikova won the women's single sculls.

The bronze medals went to Wen Tzuyun of Taiwan (China) and Bettina Plank of Austria.

Steven Da Costa becomes the first man to win historic Olympic gold in karate debut

France’s Steven Da Costa, known as the “Petit Prince”, has become the first-ever male Olympic champion in karate after defeating Turkey’s Eray Samdan in the men’s kumite -67kg final on August 5.

The bronze medals went to Jordan’s Abdel Rahman Almasatfa and Kazakhstan’s Darkhan Assadilov.

Spain’s Sandra Sanchez crowned the queen of the kata

Spain's Sandra Sanchez underscored her status as the queen of the kata, winning karate's first-ever Olympic gold medal in Tokyo 2020 at the Nippon Budokan arena, the spiritual home of karate in Japan.

It was a fitting final on karate's debut at the Olympic Games with two of the best kata specialists in the world going head-to-head.

Defending world champion Sanchez beat Japan's Kiyou Shimizu in the individual kata final, scoring 28.06 points. Producing a routine that belied her years, the 39-year-old Sanchez added to her growing legend, with Shimizu earning the silver with a score of 27.88.

Belgium won a nerve-wracking shootout to claim gold in the men's Olympic hockey final here at the Tokyo 2020 Games on August 5.

After taking the lead in the 32nd minute through Florent van Aubel, the Belgians were pegged back as Australia levelled in the fourth quarter with a goal from Thomas Whetton to leave the scores 1-1 at full-time.

Belgium's men's team had never won an Olympic gold medal, with a silver medal at Rio 2016 and a bronze at Antwerp 1920 their best finishes before today. But the 2018 world champions scored three to Australia's two in the all-important shoot out to pick up the top honours here in Japan.

Table tennis: China dominates women's team to win gold

China has continued its dominance of women’s team table tennis after winning its fourth gold medal in four consecutive Olympics at Tokyo 2020 on August 5.

Led by Cheng Meng, who won gold in women’s singles, the team, which includes double world champions Wang Manyu and Sun Yingsha, overpowered Japan 3-0 at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. The result maintained China's perfect record in the women's team event since it was introduced at the Olympic Games Beijing 2008. They also won in London 2012 and Rio 2016.


The Tokyo 2020 Olympic medal count as of 10.30pm on August 5.
