The number of sims that have just been harvested is not a natural sim but is the result of many years of planting and fertilizing by local people.

The model of growing myrtle for fruit in Cao Quang commune was supported by the Sustainable Rural Development for the Poor in Quang Binh Province (SRDP) to build on an area of ​​​​nearly 14 hectares of hilly land in 2017.

This project has supported people to go to training on experience in crops, and support to borrow loans with the goal of investing in rural development models that are profitable, socially equitable, and adaptive to change. climate. The project has the effect of promoting market linkages and pro-poor value chains while enhancing business competitiveness in rural areas.

The model of sim growing in Cao Quang commune was supported by the Sustainable Rural Development Project for the Poor in Quang Binh Province and deployed in 2017.

After 3 years of implementation, the model of sim growing in Cao Quang commune has brought high economic efficiency, helping people reduce poverty sustainably. With the support of the SRDP project, Cao Quang commune has established 3 cooperative groups of myrtle growing with 50 participating households. Myrtle is suitable for hilly soil, so it grows quickly, after 3 years of planting, it has covered the area.

“In 2017, I was trained on plants, knew that there was a SRDP project to support capital and found that growing myrtle was highly effective, so I discussed with my husband to start planting myrtle. After 3 years, me and many households have confirmed that the choice of planting myrtle is right and wants to continue to expand the area. Having this income model is also thanks to the SRDP project”, said Mr. Tran Ngoc Hai, a household growing myrtle. talk.

Every year, people in the mountainous commune of Cao Quang harvest an estimated 45 tons of sim.

According to statistics from Cao Quang Commune People’s Committee, the total output of myrtle fruit harvested each year in this locality is estimated at over 45 tons. The price of sim fruit currently ranges from 25,000-30,000 VND (1$)/kg, with nearly 15 hectares of sim in the whole commune, each year bringing in over 1 billion VND in revenue.

Picking sims one morning, collecting millions of dong

Ms. Nguyen Thi Vien, a resident of Son Thuy village, Cao Quang commune is one of the households supporting to growth of myrtle. She has 3 Sao(3000 m2) with nearly 1,500 myrtle roots, each crop also harvested about 1 ton of fruit, earning over 20 million VND(800$).

“Myrtle trees bear fruit and can be harvested continuously from mid-May to August, going up the hill to pick myrtle once every 2 days. Like the current time of myrtle ripening, every morning I pick about 4 oats, with The price is 25,000 VND/kg, nearly 1 million VND per day,” said Ms. Nguyen Thi Vien.

After one morning, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Ly harvested nearly 5 bird’s nests which were all ordered.

According to the share of some myrtle growers, in the early days of deployment, the seedlings were taken from the mountains by people, then brought back to plant in rows and ways to take care of. Myrtle is an easy plant to grow but is only suitable for hilly soils, when carefully fertilized, it will produce a lot of fruit, this is also a plant with few pests and diseases.

“Growing myrtle but its effectiveness will kill off growing rice with acacia. Sims that haven’t been in the season has been ordered, people will buy them wherever they go. This morning I also obtained nearly 5 oats and someone ordered them. bought it,” shared Mrs. Nguyen Thi Ly, a household that grows myrtle.

Many students who are on summer vacation also went to the hill to help their parents harvest sims.

Talking to Dan Tri reporter, Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong – Chairman of Cao Quang Commune People’s Committee also affirmed: “The effect from myrtle tree is very clear, in the coming time, Cao Quang commune will continue to consider converting some areas of ​​land for planting inefficient crops to grow myrtle, and at the same time encourage people to replicate the model and bring in a stable source of income.”

According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong, Cao Quang Commune People’s Committee is also gradually researching and coordinating with other departments to develop the most sustainable model of myrtle cultivation in the locality, avoiding massive development. The local government will also make efforts to do a good job as a bridge between people and businesses, creating markets and stable outputs for products.
