Covid daily tally reaches new high at 9,684

The Health Ministry confirmed 9,684 new Covid-19 cases last Sunday, the highest number recorded on a single day to date.

HCMC, the epicenter of the latest wave by some distance, continued to lead the daily tally with 3,898 cases, followed by Binh Duong (3,210), Long An (724), and Dong Nai (614).

Hanoi recorded 114 new cases in the day and Da Nang 130, cited VnExpress.

Sunday's tally is the highest daily number ever recorded in Vietnam, followed by 9,225 on July 24.

Of the new cases, 2,155 were detected in the community and the rest in quarantine facilities or lockdown areas.

With the recovery of 4,860 patients confirmed Sunday, the total number of recoveries since the start of the pandemic rose to 71,497.

HCMC also led Sunday’s death toll with 108 of 381 deaths in seven localities. It was followed by Binh Duong with 30, Long An with five and Ca Mau, Dak Lak, Binh Dinh and Ninh Thuan with one each. The total Covid-19 death toll stands at 3,397, including 3,362 in the new wave.

The number of local cases recorded since the new wave started in late April has gone up to 206,439.

Over 8.8 million people have received at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine; and at least 888,000 have received both doses.

Hanoi extended its social distancing order for another two weeks until August 22 after new clusters were found in the capital city.

The country on Sunday started to distribute Covid medicine remdesivir to several resuscitation hospitals in HCMC, after approving the use of the medicine in Covid treatment on Friday.

Vietnam allows conditional home quarantine for F0 cases

Health Minister Nguyen Thanh Long has signed a decision, allowing home quarantine for asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic Covid-19 patients in hard hit localities.

The telegram dated August 7 to cities and provinces says community infections that are asymptomatic and have a low viral load (CT ≥ 30) are allowed to self-isolate at home under close health quarantine monitoring, according to VOV.

Asymptomatic cases will be discharged from hospital for home isolation after seven days of hospitalization if they either test negative or have a low viral load (CT ≥ 30).

Those who have already recovered from the virus but re-test positive during home isolation do not need to be admitted to hospital. The patients need to self-monitor their health and report any clinical symptoms if they develop to the local healthcare facility.

The Ministry of Health reminds that home quarantine is only allowed for asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic cases in localities that are seeing a surge in cases, and it applies only if anti-Covid protocols are fully observed.

The ministry requests localities to prepare adequate oxygen, ventilators, emergency beds and other necessary supplies and equipment if the situation gets worse.

It also asks localities to instruct residents and workers at production establishments and industrial zones to take samples themselves for Covid-19 testing if necessary.

Vietnam is battling with the fourth outbreak of Covid-19, with more than 7,000 new cases recorded on a daily basis, mostly in the southern region.

Extreme heat reaches peak in northern, central regions

The Northern and Central regions of Vietnam are experiencing a severe heat wave with daytime temperature reaching a record high in August, according to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

Data from the national weather forecasting authority show the past two days saw daytime temperature reach its peak of 39 degrees Celsius or even exceed the 40 degree Celsius mark in several places.

At 01.00pm on August 7, Tam Ky district of Quang Nam province even reported a high of 40.7 degrees Celsius.

Meteorologists said that this is a severe heat wave this year that has increased in intensity and lasted for many days, affecting a large number of localities in northern and central regions.

This heat wave has broken all temperature records regional localities set in previous Augusts, they said, reported VOV.

Meteorologists attributed the severity of the extreme heat to the influence of the southwesterly wind that is causing a Foehn effect, coupled with the influence of typhoon Lupit that is pounding China’s Guangdong.

The heat wave has lasted for 14 days and is expected to reduce it intensity a bit in the middle of next week.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, global warming and climate change are causing natural disasters to occur more frequently, more fiercely, and irregularly.

Stop regular Hanoi-HCMC flights: Vietnam aviation authority

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CVAA) has proposed that all flights between Hanoi and HCMC are stopped as the nation fights a prolonged Covid-19 wave.

The CVAA said Saturday that it has asked the Ministry of Transport to freeze all regular flights between localities that are under social distancing orders, including Hanoi and HCMC, reported VnExpress.

It has proposed that only special flights are flown on air routes between social distancing localities. While flights to bring workers back to their hometowns can be considered, it would be necessary for the localities to pick up passengers at the airport to test and quarantine them, it said.

For now, flights from HCMC to Hanoi and many other localities have been suspended; and there are very few flights from Hanoi to HCMC.

The airports in the southern region that are implementing social distancing campaigns include Tan Son Nhat, Can Tho, Phu Quoc, Rach Gia, Ca Mau and Con Dao.

In the north, there’s the Noi Bai Airport in Hanoi. So far, flights from Hanoi to Rach Gia, Ca Mau, Con Dao, Can Tho and Phu Quoc have been stopped.

Hanoi authorities decided Sunday to extend the ongoing social distancing order until August 22 as a response to several Covid-19 clusters being detected in the capital city.

Vietnam enters top 10 emerging markets for global data centres

Vietnam has been listed in top 10 emerging markets in the global data centre market by ResearchAndMarkets, the world's leading market research store.

ResearchAndMarkets commented that Vietnam has impressive growth, international standard service delivery capacity, and a large number of organisations and enterprises.

The Vietnamese data centre market stood at US$858 million last year and is forecast to grow at a compounded annual growth rate of over 14.64 percent until 2026.

The growth in the Vietnamese data centre market was driven by government projects and initiatives, the report said, according to VNA.

Data protection is a matter of global concern and is becoming an important issue on the agenda of the Vietnamese Government.

The data localisation requirement under the Cybersecurity Law, plus the need for better processing speeds to assist Vietnamese users are the main drivers, which are anticipated to significantly enhance the demand for data centres in the country.

The Vietnamese Government's inclination toward digitisation has further bolstered the demand for data centres across the country.

Furthermore, the Vietnamese data centre market is driven by the shifting of enterprise data to cloud platforms. This has led to an increase in the adoption of data storage solutions, which in turn is expected to positively influence the growth of the market. Additionally, growing adoption of big data solutions, IoT and cloud-based solutions among others, is expected to propel market growth through 2026.

According to the report, major players in the Vietnamese data centre market are FPT, Viettel-CHT, Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group, KDDI, Hitachi Asia (Vietnam), Hewlett Packard, SAP Vietnam, IBM Vietnam, Microsoft Vietnam and Amazon Web Services Vietnam.
