Historical turning point: Vietnam's multi-billion industry shaking

Statistics show Vietnamese cashew nuts exist in 90 countries and regions worldwide. The export volume has been increasing year by year. In 2006, with a 520 million US dollars turnover, Vietnam officially became the world's largest exporter. By 2010, this project had helped Vietnam generate $1 billion in revenue for the first time. It became a "billion-dollar business" in the agricultural sector.

Then, cashew nut exports surged from $2.84 billion in 2016 to $3.36 billion in 2018. During the period from 2019 to 2020, the export revenue of the industry stabilized and slightly decreased. However, in the past 30 years, Vietnam's cashew industry has consistently performed well.
In 2021, despite the severe impact of COVID-19, exports at the end of the year still hit a record high of 3.64 billion US dollars, up 12.9% from 2020.
However, on the other hand, the General Administration of Customs statistics show that Vietnam spent $4.185 billion importing 2.87 million tons of raw cashew nuts. Compared to 2020, the import volume of cashew nuts increased by 91.3%, and the value increased by 132.5%. It is also Vietnam's first record-breaking trade surplus after maintaining a trade surplus for more than 30 years.
In 2022, the cashew industry resumed its trade deficit, with exports reaching 3.08 billion US dollars and imports approaching 2.68 billion US dollars.

But in the first few months of this year, Vietnam's advantage returned to the era of trade deficit. Specifically, in the first quarter of 2023, cashew nut exports reached 648 million US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 4.5%; The import volume is close to 760 million US dollars, a rise of 2.8% compared to the same period in 2022.

Since 2021, the Vietnamese crude oil supply market has shifted from Africa to Cambodia. Therefore, in 2021, the import of cashew nuts from Cambodia accounted for almost 44.8% of Vietnam's total cashew nut import value. Compared to 2020, the quantity has increased by 5.17 times, and the matter has increased by 6.79 times.

In 2022, cashew nuts imported from Cambodia accounted for 40.6% of Vietnam's total import value. In addition, it also imports from countries such as C o te d'Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria, and Tanzania. Unpeeled fresh cashews account for 96% of imports, while the rest are freshly peeled cashews.
In the first three months of this year, Vietnam mainly imported cashew nuts from Cambodia, Tanzania, C o te d'Ivoire, Ghana, and Nigeria. Vietnam's expenditure on importing cashew nuts from Cambodia is as high as 447.5 million US dollars, accounting for 58.9% of Vietnam's total cashew nut import value.
