These pink trumpet flowers give a Mekong Delta road an annual makeover

A road in the Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang is attracting visitors from across southern Vietnam thanks to the blooming rosy trumpet flowers that grow along its flanks.

Many have even traveled far to contemplate the flowers blooming on the one-kilometer road connecting National Highway No.1 with Chau Thanh District’s Administrative Center.

The stretch has been a popular spot for Instagrammers since 2019 when the 160 rosy trumpet flower trees that grow alongside the road bloomed for the first time.

Native to America, tabebuia rosea or pink poui – also known as trumpet flowers – are a rosy version of the namesake musical instrument.

When pink poui flower, most of their leaves fall from the branches, leaving just clusters of pink, trumpet-shaped flowers.

Rosy trumpet flowers usually live for three to four days before falling off the tree and blanketing the ground below in a sea of pink petals.
