Ancient hydro-meteorological station on top of Phu Lien

Located on the top of Thien Van hill, Phu Lien Meteorological Station is now 120 years old. In addition to the main role of the weather, this is also a place for a fascinating sightseeing experience.



The Phu Lien Hydrometeorological Station, now the Hydrometeorological Station of the Northeast, is located on the top of Thien Van Hill, in Phu Lien Ward, Kien An District, Hai Phong City. This place is a hydro-meteorological station, as well as a unique tourist destination in the port land.

According to the radio history book, in 1900, the Governor-General of Indochina issued a decree permitting the construction of the main building of the Indochina Meteorological Department, located at Phu Lien, on the basis of the design of architect M.Lichtenfelder together with the architect M.Lichtenfelder. the guidance and help of Mr. M.Ferra.

On September 16, 1902, the Central Meteorological and Geomagnetic Station were established with the task of conducting scientific work related to atmospheric, geomagnetic and seismic phenomena; collecting and studying data from stations in the meteorological network provided by Indochina, in order to identify atmospheric depressions and storms to inform navigation.

In 1976, the station was renamed to Phu Lien Hydro-meteorological station, managing the basic investigation, research and forecasting service for hydrometeorology, hydrometeorology, survey and control of the air and water environment. . In 1995, the Northeast Meteorological Station was established, merging 5 hydrometeorological stations including: Hai Phong, Ha Bac (Bac Ninh, Bac Giang), Cao Bang, Lang Son and Quang Ninh.

In June 2018, the World Meteorological Organization attached a sign to recognize the Phu Lien Meteorological Station as a meteorological station over 100 years old. According to this organization, currently, there are only about 100 meteorological stations over 100 years old, including Phu Lien station.

The station’s campus has many types of equipment for a basic investigation of meteorology, hydrology, hydrography, and traditional environment.

Over 120 years old, the main building of the station has been seriously degraded, many working rooms are no longer in use.

In 2012-2017, the National Hydrometeorological Center implemented a project to modernize the disaster forecasting and warning system at the Northeast Hydrometeorological Station with ODA capital from Korea and Japan. In which, a 7-storey high weather radar station with much modern equipment was built.

Phu Lien weather radar station is equipped with much modern equipments, capable of scanning with a radius of hundreds of kilometers to give accurate weather forecasts. Officials here said they rotate 24/24h, including New Year holidays to transmit timely weather information to the National Hydrometeorological Center.

Phu Lien Hydrometeorological Station is located on a hill with a poetic landscape. This place is known as a small Da Lat corner in the heart of Hai Phong city with many interesting and interesting sightseeing experiences.
