According to the government leader, the tree-planting campaign has become an annual festival at the beginning of each Lunar New Year and is also an activity to commemorate the late President Ho Chi Minh who initiated the campaign.

Due to climate change, tree planting and forest protection is a need, the PM noted.

Under the PM’s instruction, localities across Vietnam need to grow a total of roughly one billion trees between 2021 and 2025. The work should be started on the first days of the Lunar New Year.

Earlier, Phuc said that even the country’s forest coverage has risen to over 42%, the rate is lower than that of many other countries. So, the country must continue to grow forests and plant trees in major cities.

The tree-planting campaign was launched by the late President in 1959 when he wrote an article published by Nhan Dan (People) newspaper. It has since become an annual festival at the beginning of each Lunar New Year.

“Spring is the time for planting trees. Making the country all the more resplendent as eternal springtime,” he wrote, advocating “it doesn’t cost much, yet brings enormous benefits.”
