The man who built a house out of bottles

QUANG NAM – Mr. Nguyen Hoang Linh, 47 years old, Cam Thanh commune, Hoi An city, used more than 12,000 glass bottles to decorate a unique two-story house.

On the first day of the Lunar New Year, Mr. Linh was given a break from work. Having some free time, he continued to complete the two-story house, each floor measuring 90 square meters, made of unfinished bottles.

In 2006, Mr. Linh built a house 5 m wide, 18 m long, with 20 concrete pillars, but just finished the rough part, lack of money for finishing. In 2016, seeing that Hoi An had many restaurants that threw away glass bottles and were skilled in construction, he came up with the idea of building a strange house with walls made of bricks and cement, inside and outside will be attached with bottles, so Collect and store in the backyard.

Before using bottles to make a house, Mr. Linh sorted and washed them. For each bottle, he poured clean water into it and then closed the lid, the bottles without lids were sealed with foam. “This way creates insulation, the house will be cool in the dry season,” he said, adding that the water in the bottle also creates reflective colors for the house.

Mr. Linh used cement to attach the bottle to the wall. “Bottle attachment requires perseverance. Only about 5 layers of bottles can be made at a time, then stop, wait for the cement to bond before continuing”, he said. Then he carefully wiped each bottle with a damp rag.

Every day, Mr. Linh can attach nearly 100 bottles to the wall.

After 5 years, Mr. Linh has attached more than 12,000 bottles around the wall of his house. “In hot weather and in cold rain they stretch, but don’t break,” he says.

The house was designed by Mr. Linh with two stairs, both decorated with dense bottles.

A layered wall of bluebottles emits iridescent colors.

Wall-mounted white bottle, inside contains transparent water.

The railing in the house is also fitted with bottles. “Many people say I’m crazy when I build a house out of bottles, but I ignore it, continue to collect bottles, and build a house by myself,” he said.

Mr. Linh’s house is located next to the water coconut forest. It is expected that in the next 5 years, he will add nearly 10,000 bottles to complete. “The reason is that the bottle is not enough and I am busy working as a builder, so I don’t have much time to do it. On rainy days, I can only do it when it’s raining,” he said.
