PV Power urged to ensure sufficient electricity supply for national development

PV Power urged to ensure sufficient electricity supply for national development

The government official was speaking during a ceremony to mark the 10th anniversary of the PetroVietnam Power Corporation (PV Power) establishment held on May 17.

According to the Deputy PM, in the coming time, electricity production and supply will continue to be recognised as one of the most important and critical areas for national socio-economic development.

Demand for electricity is on the rise and is expected to be 1.5 times higher than the current level by 2020, while hydropower plants have reached their limits. In the current power structure, hydropower accounts for about 40%, but this proportion will decrease. It is therefore imperative to develop alternative sources of power. However, the development of renewable energy sources cannot yet be implemented on a large scale because of the high costs, the government official admitted.

For that reason, thermal power, especially coal-fired power, is still the main source of electricity and is expected to continue to be from now until 2030 and possibly even longer, said Deputy PM Dung.

In addition, the pressure on the power sector comes from an imbalance between the supply and demand of each region. While the South accounts for more than 50% of the total electricity demand (the North nearly 40%, the Central Region nearly 10%), the current power supply source is concentrated mainly in the North (over 50%). The South only can produce less than 40%. Therefore, local power shortages are a difficult problem for the industry, posing the risk that there will be a lack of electricity in the South by 2018 if factories are not meeting progress, the deputy PM outlined.

According to him, another challenge for the power industry is to develop both thermal power and environmental protection. This is very difficult; however, it is imperative to do so.

"This is a very difficult period, which requires the utmost effort from enterprises in the power sector with the goal of securing electricity for economic development," he affirmed.

Reports released by PV Power show that in just ten years, the corporation has risen to become the country's second largest electricity supplier, behind Vietnam Electricity Group (ENV), with total capacity reaching more than 4,200 MW.

Every year, it provides over 10% of electricity output for the whole national power grid, generating over VND180 trillion (US$7.92 billion) in revenue each year, pre-tax profit at over VND9.6 trillion, and budget contribution at more than VND8.8 trillion.

Applauding PV Power achievements and efforts in recent years, Deputy PM Dung required the corporation to identify shortcomings in order to overcome limitations in management and production, creating momentum for its effective and sustainable development.

The corporation should focus on mobilising resources to finish thermal power projects in progress, including Thai Binh 2, Long Phu 1 and Hau River 1, while quickly completing procedures to organise the implementation of electricity projects in Central Region 1, Central Region 2, Son My 2, and Nhon Trach 3 and 4, in accordance with the schedule assigned by the Government.

Dung also urged the power corporation to ensure the safe and efficient operation of existing gas-fired power plants (Ca Mau 1-2, Nhon Trach 1-2, Vung Ang 1, Hua Na, Dak Drinh) and to study new projects for the next phases.

In addition, the deputy PM also asked the enterprise to take proactive measures to implement its restructuring plan, attach importance to perfecting the organisational model and improve the lives of its staff, while actively participating in socio-political and humanitarian activities.
